"AI" and "They" are people, who take advantage of this tech that becomes more intrusive, invasive, and either use it in ethical ways (which can be frighteningly subjective), or use it in unethical ways ( which IS definitely objectively frightening). Keeping track of those people/entities behind each and every step of AI's advancement is crucial to holding accountable (or giving just credit) those who misuse the tech (or make life better with it [again a frighteningly subjective thing]).
