The solution is creating “a sense of wonder” and a value in learning. Maybe Hampshire college has always been onto something with their approach to learning. This is unlikely at most schools since most are too large for teachers to be able write a report for every student re their performance. That said, all schools should at least make standardized test results optional . If the message is, “college is not about the grade/score but about growth that takes place in the journey of self discovery, attaining knowledge and developing critical thinking skills”—they need to place less of a focus on grades and with standardized tests when they select their students. Applicants should be selected on their love of learning—their willingness/openness to learning and capacity for growth—not their grades or sat/act results. Personally don’t feel grades accurately reflect a students ability-at best they often reflect their ability to play by the rules ie. meet deadlines , follow instructions and give the right answer for the grade. These seem like lessons for a kindergartener not a college/university student. Students should be allowed to take risks, learn from their failures in a safe place, and encouraged to apply /incorporate their experiences becoming independent and critical thinkers. The only antidote to AI is instilling a sense of wonder (Rachel Carson) in students. No hope in sight as long as students feel they are working for a grade and have no desire to learn for themselves.
