I wasn’t born with talent, I was born in a family that encouraged my artistic journey, my grandma is a realism painter on the side, so is my nana but despite my current disconnect with my nana as well as mine and my grandmas conflicting world views they are artists and clearly encouraged (and still do) me to keep drawing even if I drew badly, my mum also dabbles in art, mainly realism but she did paint a picture of Mario for my step dad, they all encouraged me to keep going to keep drawing. My older sister does art but rarely now days and shares it much less due to people who insulted her online, my little brother does art every single day as he loves drawing cartoons and realistic dinosaurs and never got insulted for it, I draw when my depression is less and when my weakened tendons allow me to but I share all to friends, not only do I draw but I write but I wasn’t born good at writing, in fact I find it challenging to write sometimes, I wasn’t born with a talent! I grew the talent! Saying someone is born with a talent is insulting and dismissive to their journey and is like saying that a seed, as soon as it was planted, shot out of the ground and started growing fruit or flowers, it dismisses the effort that goes into growing a plant from a seed, yes there are idiot savants who as soon as they try something is exceptionally talented at it but that is minority, majority have to work to be good at the skills they want to have You wouldn’t say “doctors were born with a talent” you’d acknowledge they had years and years of training and studying even before they were adults, same with scientists, dentists, policemen (despite how bad they are in America), builders, programmers, veterinarians and engineers, they weren’t born with the knowledge of their respective fields they learned, they saw a profession they wanted to do, whether it was on tv or their parents had that profession or another close adult family member or friend had the profession, they decided “that’s what I’m going to do” and they studied and trained for it, they weren’t born with the skills. I apologise for my rambling but I feel strongly about people dismissing mine and others journeys in developing skills.
