As a musician, I get periods of self doubt over my work. Like every artist, I have an incredible love / hate relationship with my own work. Sometimes l can hear something I like one week and hate the next week when reflecting on my albums. Things that make me internally cringe and think why I did it this way and not that way, why I ever thought my performance was passable etc.. but with the AI stuff that’s happening, I’m not worried because I honestly can’t see serious music collectors or music enthusiasts listening as closely or as seriously to AI generated slop as they do with music made by humans. Yes, AI can get things right quicker than I can but Rick is right, it isn’t human and isn’t relatable. When a song is slightly out of tune or something is out of time or whatever, the human part of the music is what people are attracted to. Some might argue though that it isn’t just AI that started the enshitification of Pop music, it all started when we took the human feel out of it with auto tune; when used as a tool rather than an effect. Also, it started with reality TV, shows like Pop Idol and X Factor. AI (in the musical sense) doesn’t worry me at all. It exists and there doesn’t seem to be an end to it now that it’s implemented. The main AI worry I have, is that our brains will be useless in the next five years because everyone will utilise it for the simplest of tasks, replacing good old research and imagination.
