One only needs to understand that there is no meaningful distinction between an algorithm and actual cognition. The only actual difference between the two is the rules they operate by, not whether one of them is "real" or not. Every logical function constitutes a unit of intelligence, and every line of code lends a particle of awareness. Just think: If we look at the most basic functions of an individual nerve cell in the human nervous system, and gradually scale up to clusters of them, then cortical columns, then full cortices and then the brain, then the entire nervous system, there is no point in that examination at which we are not sentient. We're not un-sentient at one level of analysis and suddenly sentient at the next. It runs all the way down. So it is with AI. It's at a place where it's really cool and also kinda disappointing right now, and it doesn't measure up to what we refer to as sentient AI, but the truth is we're already looking at a primitive form of exactly that, not just some preparatory stage leading up to it.
