Frankly the "middle ground" is not a rational conclusion. If the claims made by big tech are substantially true, AI is an existential threat to humanity. The only way humanity is safe is if predictions of AGI are just hype to to run up stock prices at the expense of wasting huge amounts of energy and doing extreme harm to the environment.
