"To date, essentially every life taken in war has been the direct result of a decision made by another human. Human judgement determines death." Are you sure about that?
An artillery battery fires a salvo of shells into a town that kills 2 enemy combatants and 1 civilian. Whose decision was the direct cause that killed them? Was it a individuals who "pulled the trigger" of each artillery piece? The officers in charge of each gun crew, or the officer in charge of the battery? Or the forward observer that called in the grid position? The infantry troops who requested artillery support?
Bomber raids in WWII saw over a thousand planes in the sky at once, dropping masses of bombs onto cities. The deaths below were the direct result of whose decision? The chiefs of staff who decided on a strategic bombing campaign? The generals who chose city targets? The pilots who were responsible for flying to those targets, the navigators responsible for positively identifying that they were over the correct target, the bombardier who opened the bomb bay doors? Who made the decision to kill?
A city in eastern Europe is under siege in the year 700. The enemy has them surrounded and has catapulted diseased corpses into the city, the city is starving and sick... every morning children die. Whose decision was their death the direct result of? And what decision did they make?
A jet fighter pilot is pinged by enemy radar fires a Homing Anti-Radar Missile which locks onto the enemy's radar sweeps, tracking it to the source and killing the team operating it. Two days late the pilot fires a heat-seeking missile at an enemy jet. The enemy jet takes evasive action, but the electronics in the missile stay locked on his heat signature and his jet is hit and destroyed. Who killed those men? The pilot or the computers in the missiles?
We've been disconnecting death from individual decisions for a LOOOOOOONG time. Why are autonomous drones different from all of those decisions?
