Another factor to consider: many projections about the future potential of AI implicitly assume that society collectively allows such development to occur. If we pick the extreme scenario - in which AGI is developed and humans are effectively replaced or surpassed in all intellectual pursuits - we don't have to lay down and accept it. There's nothing stopping us from making a conscious choice to reject the technology.
