I don't even have to read research papers to know that using AI would dumb me down. In my country, Oz, I was in highschool when pocket calculators were allowed in class...eventually they allowed them during exams. To this day, 45 years later, I still struggle to make basic calculations in my head, or even on paper. I can only imagine how atrophied one's mind would become when using AI, and equally importantly, becoming dependent on it. What I noticed about the introduction of pocket calculators in school, was the social status, thus self-worth* obtained according to what calculator your parents bought you, and the thrill and seductive nature of using a "magical" machine to do what only the brain could do. (*self-worth, only when it's obtained via external validation) To me, the seductiveness of using technology is a primary problem, for I don't have issues with technology itself. I deeply appreciate: - suspension on my MTBs - hand and power tools. - my computer and tablet. - my digital cameras, basic telescope and nocs. - the advancements in hiking boots and riding shoes. - etc. The problem is when using technology weakens one's abilities. Technology one actually doesn't need to use, but one desires to. I'll never use AI. I also practice using my mind, when I have technology that can do the same task. Consider this: How empowering and wonderful does it feel when you exercise and increase fitness, strength and well-being. I know my sense of self-worth and pride in achievement increases whenever I make physical gains, even the small ones I do at my age. Thus the positivity of my attitude increased with every increase in development. Now apply that to mental development. 13 months ago, I broke my collarbone...was sideswiped by an adult Wombat on my mtb. I lay on bed for 12 months, doing nothing except play FO4 on my PS4 trying to get the bone to rejoin. Unfortunately, I'm one of the tiny % where the bone never heals. I started riding again exactly 12 months after the prang. Rehab will take me around 6 months to get back to the previous level of fitness I had, where I was doing 42km\3hr XC rides. The point of that story is, for the 12 months I did close to zero physical activity, my body slowly atrophied, from lack of use. And because it's a gradual process, the decline isn't noticeable, until I had to do something beyond normal day to day activities. Getting back on the bike, I'm starting off at 18km return rides on the easier smoother section, and that's a struggle in itself, and thais is alalso after starting of doign 3.5km walks increasign to 10 km a few months prior, which were also a struggle when I began that. Atrophy occurs when you don't use that part of your body, and you don't notice atrophy is occuring until it's too late and you've become extremely weak. Mental atrophy is also a reality. As the old saying goes, use it, or lose it.
