Mrs. Blackburn of TN is the wrong person for this AI committee, as she is just looking at the effect of AI on her constituents and her state. We need people in government who can imagine the effects of AI from a 30 thousand foot viewpoint. These officials need to talk about the bigger issues of the negative impacts, or threats to the very existence of humanity, and not just the immediate or potential monetary losses. It's imperative that regulators quickly put up the necessary guardrails, this is what most AI companies are screaming for. At this pace, Congress will act too late. It's sad to say, but Congress doesn't get it. They are focusing more on the short term political and monetary losses, instead of the high probability of an existential threat to humanity. In other words, Congress is seeing AI as another Napster or Social Media, instead of the larger threats that AI will have on society.
