Companies severely overestimated AI. Today’s knowledge fundamentally binds them. Sure, they’re able to solve previously difficult questions that others have struggled with, but they’re not able to think about the fundamental questions asked in 10 years. AI won’t know how to build towards such developments without hallucinations. They will not replace Nobel laureates, researchers, pioneers, PhDs etc. However, this is not dismissive of AI or its impact. AI may optimise our work process. It may make accessing or assessing information much faster. It can be an incredibly powerful tool when used appropriately. As far as impact is concerned, AI will fall somewhere between what computers can do and software products such as Excel. It’s situated in the middle making it one of the more powerful tools we now have at our disposal. We should be training our workforce to work with AI tools to increase productivity and not replace them. Investors hedging their bets completely on any product claiming to be “AI-Powered, AI-Enhanced, etc” likely overestimated its true impact and deviated away from the scope of AI’s actual purpose. ‘AI’ was a very convenient justification to reduce staff headcount without spooking investors leading to negative connotations with the term when AI should have always been our way to optimise productivity.
