Also, can we just deconstruct this branding of "artificial intelligence" a little bit? Back when I was in school (I'm ancient, so it's been a while) the field that led to current neural nets was called something like data science. It wasn't about generating pictures of cats, it was about recognizing patterns that could potentially be useful. What someone then did was turn these things around and say "well if it can find patterns in data, maybe we can use it to generate a data set to!" And so they do, and it's kinda a cute trick. It's not intelligence though. It doesn't do what people do. It doesn't have agency (or even the subjective experience of agency for you metaphysical nerds out there). "AI" is branding that makes it seem like the tech companies have something THEY DO NOT HAVE. They don't have C3P0. They do not have Data (Star Trek). They do not have HAL 9000. They have an organized kaleidoscope. As AI-haters (a proud and noble thing), we should come up with a better name for this tech, one that rejects the perspective being imposed on us by the ruling class. One that rejects their imposition of magical technology intelligence and calls it out for what it is.
