hi, disabled artist here. i've done work for major publishing companies (macmillan and penguin random house to name a couple). i am quite frankly tired of ai bros coming in and trying to talk for me and people like me, who are usually also working artists. i am also a self-taught artist - like you, i learned how to draw using printer paper, pencils, and pens i've collected in school and from my father (who was a draftsman). learning art skills is something you do not have to go to school for - if you are determined and have a passion for artwork, you will do the artwork. full stop. i have continued to make artwork both out of personal joy and accessibility to a live-able income. in my country (united states) disability checks do not cover most basic needs, so i have no choice but to work and most jobs who would take me are typically low minimum wage positions, so i make my money through art and my art business. we get creative and work with our disabilities. most, if not all my disabled friends and contemporaries are only able to pay for necessities like housing, food, and clothing through their art and creative-focused business. they didn't get here because of midjourney - they got here through hard work and determination (you know, the things everyone tells us we just "need to do more of" to get out of rough circumstances.) our work includes research, studying of forms and anatomies, color theory, etc. as well as business management, administrative duties, and accounting. there is so much happening behind the scenes that most folks do not see when they scroll by artwork on instagram, etc. what ai dudes want is simply a product - more "content creation" slop consumption without the work, which feels incredibly appropriate for those interested in ai. you want the product, but not all the work that comes with it. i don't need ai for accessibility. art has always been accessible and approachable. stop talking for us.
