I always find it extremely telling when tech bros, even before the rise of AI and LLMs, would so quickly turn to targeting humans instead of all of the large scale problems that really would benefit from the tireless learning, sifting, and producing that these neural networks can be used for. It's never about how we might use them to combat climate change or to improve housing, it's never about resource allocation, it's never about disability aid, it's always about "replacing" people. I'm a barista (and part-time bartender), and have been in specialty coffee for 18 years. I've been told my entire career that it's not a "real" job, that it's for high school kids, that automation will take over my worthless position, and yet the industry has boomed bigger than ever, even with robots that make coffee. If, somehow, the whole of the service industry were to be replaced by complete automation, there would still be interest in the hand/human-made. There would still be those who cook and brew for fun. If money were no issue, I would always want to be a barista. There was a point in my career, about 10 years ago, when I nearly left the industry to become a blacksmith. I would love the chance to do that again, if I couldn't be a full-time barista, and I have skill in other hands-on crafts, like knitting, calligraphy, and sculpting. When I think about how many people who have never once considered who they are without the Windex cure they're clinging to (be it a job or a relationship or wealth or a title), it completely baffles me.
