I think Cal is spot on with the take that we need to be realistic about how this wave of AI is affecting jobs so we’re ready for the actual displacement. AI will be a massively disruptive technology, but how disruptive and when the disruption will happen is a massive unanswered question. All the breathless hype is assuming that this is the final stretch before we get to human-level intelligence in AI, but there isn’t much evidence that’s actually true. It’s important to keep in mind every other advance in AI since the 60’s has led to breathless predictions that we’re right around the corner from AI like in science fiction, and every time it’s been wrong.
