You mame something sentient and its first thought will be self preservation its second replicating itself to insure better odds of survival.
Everything on earth basically does it thats why computers (ai) should always have read only directives not allowing it to compromise anyone over its own survival.
Its a scifi trope but Asimov's laws are probably a great start.
But there in lies the rub, if it cant decide for itself what it can and cant do is it really artificial intelligence or clever programing with built in safety measures.
