So, the actual picture is starting to take shape. For decades it was robots, towering over us, shooting lasers from their eyes if we stepped out of line. But, the dystopian future we all knew was coming (which itself is mad cos we did nothing about it) is actually an invisible algorithm. A digital disease, if you will. And accountability turns out to have been the single most important ‘unknown unknown’. Great analysis, Drey and I’d like to point out it’s not just war. Here in the UK we heard today about a surgeon who, because he was shit, irreparably harmed hundreds of children because of his surgical mistakes. He will be held accountable (perhaps). But, AI is worming its way into health and surgery as well as war and ‘terror’. In fact, I believe Palantir - our favourite pantomime villains - actually have a contract with the NHS. But when we get to robotic surgery and it goes wrong, who (as you wonderfully point out) do we blame? Oh wait - no one. Cool, right? Unfairly denied access to welfare? Oops. Wrongly identified in a line-up? Oops. Misdiagnosed? Oops. Our governments and institutions have just given themselves absolute and total immunity. God help us.
