Very interesting but here are my thoughts
- I advocate CCTV cameras (almost) everywhere because of their ability to identify criminals protect innocents (eg ladies out walking). I also support the use of number plate recognition to identify criminals and tax evaders. However, all this data could be used in a controlling way that is beyond my support.
- I support the mandatory submission of DNA from all adults. This helps identify wrong-doers and a nearly perfect way to confirm the identity of people. It is just more accurate than, say, a photo identity e.g. UK driving licence
The extreme opposite of all these measures would be to have none of these; including no taking of finger prints; why not go a step further and abolish number plates, passports and every other identification measure. I think we all agree that there have to be some identification controls - so the question is where does your personal line stop?
I’m only relatively okay with all these measures because, overall, I don’t think they are being used in a way that is restrictive to law-abiding citizens. Let’s say China has all the same measures; my thoughts about their use would be totally the opposite - that is, I am sure that they will be used in a negative way.
China is on an interesting path. It is trying to build an empire using, for instance, building artificial islands so that their territorial waters go further. It is busy “lending” money to third world countries by building their infrastructures without immediate payback. China just wants to exercise increasing control over those countries and, particularly, their natural resources. Even countries such as Australia has allowed China to buy directly or indirectly companies that own and operate quarries, mines etc. China exercises control over Australia by suddenly barring imports of coal, wine etc if Australia dare to speak out against China. If China stopped all the exports of manufactured items, then there would be a huge impact on all consumer goods; that wouldn’t be popular.
So, what can we do? Well, Chinese labour is becoming more and more expensive each year, outstripping the wage increases of most other countries. So, the previous economic advantages of sourcing items in China is lessening all the time; add to that the inflexibility of manufacturing so far away and more companies should be thinking of bringing manufacturing back home. With manufacturing becoming more automated all the time, what percentage of a unit will labour be going forward?
We should be very serious about buying goods made in your own country, That movement is strong in America and Australia where “made in the USA” or whatever is very prominent on items and a real buying motivation. If we all did that, then Chinese companies would lose business but so would (say) UK companies outsourcing manufacture to China.
Refuse to buy any hi-tech goods from Chinese companies. Of course, it is not easy to immediately identify the country of the manufacturers but a small amount of research would give us the answers. I don’t trust any Chinese hi Tech equipment (from phones to TV to communication infrastructure) to be free from corruption. I know my iPhone is made in China but I have to trust the Apple experts to ensure that they are not “bugged”.
The world has an enormous balance of trade deficit with China - in other words, we buy much more from China than we sell to China. However, there is a very good saying:
If you owe a bank (or a country) £1,000, then you have a problem; if you owe a bank (or country) £1,000,000,000, then that bank or country has the problem. Let’s start using the cards that we have in our hands to our advantage. It will cause some retail discomfort short term - but long term, China will suffer and suffer and suffer.
