Personally, i think it needs to be reevaluated what sentience means, especially for machine learning.
The concept of sentience is often based on human and animal traits. Being aware of yourself, being aware of others, self preservation, emotions.
But a lot of these things are evolutionary results and byproducts.
An AI might not need to develop being able to be aware of itself, if it can run system checks to verify it is still functioning.
An AI might not have a desire for self preservation, if it expects that a different AI, or a newer version of itself will replace it.
An AI will likely never have a need to develop actual emotional responses, when simply emulating them is good enough to trick people. There is no need to spend any more resources on developing something, when the bare minimum will do.
