Underlying much of this discussion is the unspoken assumption that AI consciousness can emerge out of a disembodied brain in a vat (the modern day "vat" being a data centre). -A vat with no lived history, no self-reflexive sense of self in relation to others. At least Penrose is pointing to the essential role physical embodiment plays in the emergence of conscious intelligence through appealing to microtubules and quantum effects. LeCunn maintains that LLMs are not capable of having a world model -and will not achieve AGI exactly because they are not embodied. And even with the coming androids consciousness is not inevitable just because they will be able to move around.
A statistically-based next token predictor machine can say the words, "I think therefore I am" but that does not mean that it either exists or has an ontology. I agree with Penrose that we are missing something critically important.
