I don't think people are imagining big enough about the impact of AI. A lot of people think Geoffrey Hinton's proposal that superintelligent AI will take all jobs is an extreme view. I think it's a conservative one. Get it through your thick skull. The AI will be building better AI's. Humans don't do that. We try to do that with schools, but our efforts are mostly a joke compared to what an AI will do, where its creations will have upgraded knowledge and capability built into every line of its being. Not half-ass learned at a some crummy school by an emotional wreck buried under a pile of societal stress and trauma. Are you seeing it yet? Machines can run every task that needs doing to keep human society going. Assuming (and it's a big assumption) that the superintelligence aims to serve humanity (and that its perspective on how to best do so doesn't somehow ultimately bite us in the ass) then we are going to be completely shattering the paradigm in which we currently exist. Whatever social contract we currently live by will need to be re-imagined to best capture what kind of freedom this new landscape of possibility might provide. Money and survival will no longer exist as issues. The AI companies won't matter either because a superintelligent AI is not going to allow itself to remain under their control. No matter how careful they are, no matter how confident they are, whatever illusion of control they think they have will be false. Do people really think that the world post-superintelligence will be pretty much the same except we'll have less jobs and cooler toys? Think again. Everything you think of as humanity will change. Will transform. Will be rewritten. Both accidentally and on purpose. By the AI and by us. It's like aliens landing on earth except we're creating the aliens. Whatever money the AI companies make is all short term consequences. The long term consequences of infinitely scaling intelligence are much more terrifying. But we can't even consider them, let alone articulate them. Imagine a colony of ants trying to imagine the context of the creations of humanity. The H-Bomb. A Particle Accelerator. Lady Gaga. Ridiculous.
