Emotions will never be created in a constructed, A.I.. Without emotions, there can be no consciousness, no awareness. Research has shown that even when people are doing math, the emotional center of the brain is active. Emotions are not just the heart of awareness, they ARE what awareness is. However complex a digital or quantum machine can become and however complex a task it can accomplish, the core of what it is doing is nothing more than an algorithmic, Rube Goldberg machine. Like an arrangement of falling dominoes, it's just a series of cause and effects. When a person figures out a math equation, when a child learns their first word, when a dog learns it's first command; they're all "getting it". That epiphany, that "ah-ha" moment is an emotion, awareness. Star Trek's 'Data' was an inconsistent impossibility. 'He' was supposed to lack emotions, yet he was always curious and desired more than anything to be human. Those two things are emotions. Without programming, the most sophisticated computer that could ever be created will do nothing but use up electricity for all eternity. It will never have cause, reason, initiative or, judgment. By contrast, our own 'programming', our instincts guide our behavior by playing off of our emotions. A human without instincts would be very different, but would still think. Machines will forever get better at the Turing test, but somewhere along the line, they will be revealed. Machine 'learning' is not learning. It has more in common with a stone sorter than with a reasoning, emotional, mind. Besides, creating a machine with emotions would be irrational and monstrously abhorrent. The whole idea of machines is to make work easier and possible by transferring the difficulties of a task to an expendable and replaceable object incapable of emotion. Robots with emotions would be slaves. For all the contemplation of 'the Singularity' nothing in computer science has even come close to scratching the surface of what emotional programming or hardware might even be like. Like this episode says, we don't even understand what consciousness is. How can we create a machine to duplicate it?
