i mean, the ai content does not build itself
if i use the english language to sketch a picture instead of using a pencil, how is that form of creation illegitimate? or, put another way, why is using words to create art in one medium - text - fine and cool and very human, but the moment i translate those same words into an image via an LLM, now it's 'AI Slop' and no longer art?
i mean, Angel Engine clearly has something to say. the author is speaking to you their inner truths, as surely as any other artist, and they are doing it by both conventional writing and also by translating their writing into images in a way that could not be done before. why doesn't that count? what part of the inner truth or artist voice is being lost?
i just finished watching a different lamentation on a country song that was AI generated, and again the bemoaning was about how there's no artist there. but that's not true. someone did have to go and conceptualize that song and figure out how to communicate that idea to an LLM and then curate the end result and etc etc etc. how is that not an act of creation? it's fckn absurd to even say the end product is somehow cheap or slop because it's from a genre and with a tone that hasn't been on vogue in ages. it's not some bandwagon effort, but someone clearly wishing to express themselves through a type of music they must love that hasn't been popular in a long time
and even the arguments about the whole machinery of it all falls apart the moment you reckon with the fact that we're all still surrounded by gatekeepers. Angel Engine is interesting in no small part because it is so different from other pieces in its genre, and that's true because so much of anime is consolidated and heavily curated and focus tested and very much turned into a consumable product by the time any audience sees it
even the democratization that has been YouTube is compromised by YouTube's algorithm (although, I do have to say, it's feeling a lot fresher these days. they clearly tweaked something a little while ago that is permitting smaller channels to hit my feed)
i just finished watching a video where the argument against AI art is that Art Is People, and sorry but that's utter nonsense. that dismisses whole branches of art that are just accidents or are fleeting moments of nature or are Jackson Pollack wasted and pouring paint onto a canvas without much praxis or intent (which isn't to say that's all of his work, of course not, just to say that he did do that and some of those piece are absolutely breathtaking anyway)
you are mad about AI Art for the same reason people were mad about TV, about radio, about print, about video games, etc etc etc. every single new medium has this instant backlash attached to it; this raging mob of gatekeepers and Legitimate Artists (TM) claiming that only THEY possess the REAL art. and everything else is just commodity
