Thank you for covering this so succinctly! Great job, want to get more spotlight on this meltdown. One point I haven't seen mentioned yet: they've also changed their terms of service to say they can steal anything you write. To explain: NaNoWriMo have a tool in their website for validating word counts, where you copy-paste what you've written in and it checks it before adding to your word total. Previously, they had a pretty good public statement to reassure people that nothing they copied into this field would ever be saved anywhere, used, passed to anybody else etc. Now, as of their new AI partnerships, they've changed this to state that anything passed through the word count tool will be scraped by the tools they've partnered with and used for AI training. Whilst this is technically exploitative ToS modification rather than outright illegal theft of creative works in service to a glorified pattern-replication algorithm, it's just as morally bankrupt.
