I’ve done both traditional and AI art, and I’m genuinely excited about where AI art is headed. Once your work enters the public sphere, you lose meaningful control over how it’s used. Like it or not, that’s the nature of public expression. Arguably, you also give up the ethical right to control it. Yes, you should absolutely be able to stop people from profiting off your work without permission. And at the same time, you also can’t (for example) stop someone from quietly using your drawing as a reference while learning to draw. You can’t reach into their mind and erase their memory of your image. Their use of it is not theft. That’s how humans (and machines) learn. Once it’s out in the world, it becomes part of the world. Training an AI on publicly available images is, in principle, no different from how a human artist learns: by observing, internalizing, and synthesizing. The tools may differ, but the core process is the same. This isn’t about taking something away from artists. It’s about giving more people—those without the desire, time, resources, or ability to learn to do art—a way to express what’s in their heads. To express it meaningfully and at a quality they’re happy with. You don’t have the right to tell someone that the only way their character can come to life is if they spend years learning or pay you to do it. Generative AI doesn’t stop anyone from dedicating their life to craft. It just makes that one path no longer the only path. And if you truly create because you love it, you’ll keep creating—even if the career side becomes more niche or less profitable. There will always be value in human-made art. But now there’s room for more voices, more visions, and more participation. That’s not the end of art; it’s a new chapter. A lot of the anger in the community comes from fear, and I get that. It’s scary to see a world you built your life around change this fast. But trying to poison the well won’t stop this. I'm not mad, and I don't blame people for trying. But the technology isn’t going anywhere, and the more accessible it becomes, the more people it will help.
