I say please and thank you to AI assistants whenever I use them, however rare, for the same reason that I take spiders outside. I just don't see a reason not to be kind when interacting with another being. (Obviously I agree that our past 100 plus years of anthropomorphizing robots and technology definitely plays into the vast majority of people seeing AI assistance as beings.) When I say please and thank you, I'm not thinking about a future where we will have to atone for our behavior. In fact, I'm not really thinking about anything, I do it automatically because that's just what you do when you're talking to someone. I understand the frustration towards technology, especially as it is utilized more and more in discriminatory ways, but I see that the same way that I see most other social issues. You have to look past the issue itself to find the cause, which is, as usual, the ultra-rich and companies that train these algorithms not spending the additional time and effort to correct issues once they are found because it does not benefit them personally or financially. And I agree with the final sentiment. It can be nice to vent your frustrations, but the mere fact that clanker is called a slur, in combination with the racism style videos that are being made, makes me fear for how these people interact with *people* in their lives that may inconvenience them. No, I don't think it automatically means that you are a racist, but the fact is that the vast majority of people *do* see AI and robots in some type of anthropomorphized way tells me that you are okay with using slurs against something that you see as at least partially human. I don't think it's a conscious decision, but it is one that is worth evaluating so that it doesn't accidentally end up bleeding into how you treat people.
