GE tried fully automated manufacturing before 1990, but failed and eventually moved manufacturing overseas. The issue with automation is that someone had to program the machines and do the maintenance which turned out to be more time consuming and higher paid people. There is probably a good reason why some of the top people in the AI are saying that AI is a bubble right now in October 2025. These AI companies are paying a ton of smart people to solve real world problems on paper so that it can be fed into their AI systems. It is not possible to compete with computers if its about things it has been trained and programmed, but it probably still need people to adapt and train the AI for variables, when things don't go or turn out as planned.
