The issue is that capitalism doesn't go well with progress. If you were to automate half the jobs, that means half of consumers now don't have an income they can spend on the automatically produced goods. At the same time, replacing jobs with the one time cost of a machine is almost always profitable for a business individually, so they're gonna keep doing that until the system collapses.
Literally the only way forward is public ownership of the means of production (aka socialism)
