Maybe the USA is different but usually companies want someone with a degree so they know the person has a certain mental capability (often intelligence). Reading and writing skills are definitely seen as valuable and AI (partially) ruins acquiring those skills.
It's quite normal here to be able to apply without a degree if you can show you've got the right mental capacities/ experience for the job.
