I dont think any of you guys from Vox are understanding the problem, from how I've been reading your tweets and listening to what you guys have said on this topic.
If an algorithm was trained on images online created by artists, is that even considered under fair use that the artists consented to?
If a hobbyist studies an artist's style and replicates it, they can't profit off of that image or claim it as his own—he must acknowledge his sources or inspirations. And if he does sell it, any time, the source artist does have the right to say please take it down, this is art theft. But how can AI acknowledge its sources? How will the source artists be credited and sufficiently compensated for their contribution training that AI? And why are the devs who created the model able to earn millions for a model trained on artists' work who are unpaid and will continue to go unpaid?
