I was always fascinated with the movie I-robot, it always looked and still looks in many ways like what the future will be about. Including those electric auto driving trucks. Robots are not here yet, at least not like in the movies... but automatic driving is the future. Ship history is always very interesting to look at because it's as old as humanity itself, and there are many events and stories that are very relatable; During the Industrial Revolution, there was a big change when coal was replaced as the main fuel by oil. Many coal shovelers and sea port unions protested around the world, because they were loosing their jobs. It was much faster and easier to fuel up a big ship with oil, trough a single hose with a pump, rather than hundreds of hard working men breaking their backs. Many lost their jobs, but none of them missed it, and a new standard appeared. A similar event happened during the containerization after WW2, or the "cargo standardization" for shipping. Before this, many port workers loaded and unloaded ships boxes by hand, a hard back breaking job that was replaced by manned cranes loading and unloading standard sized containers. The same thing happened, many lost their jobs, but none of them missed it, and a new standard appeared. I'm not saying truckers won't miss their jobs, or compare them to a bunch of box carriers, but such a hard stressful job, was bound to be replaced by a modern solution in our modern computerized, AI heading world. High school educated men will have to find an alternative, and I'm sure they will find it.
