When it comes to AI and education, I think we should absolutely teach students how to use AI as a tool for learning, it would be negligent not to. It can enhance understanding, support research, and help students explore ideas more deeply. It’s especially valuable because students learn in different ways, and AI can adapt to those differences, sometimes explaining and even showing concepts in ways that click better than a traditional lecture or textbook. There is no doubt AI is an excellent learning tool. However, when it comes to testing, AI should not be allowed under any circumstances. Assessments must reflect what a student has actually studied, practiced, and learned on their own. That’s the only way to measure real knowledge and critical thinking. As AI becomes more integrated into education, if we start to see declines in testing outcomes, that should be a signal for educators to better teach students how to use AI to support their learning, while still preparing them to perform independently. Nothing replaces testing. It remains the only reliable way to ensure students are truly learning and are prepared for the jobs they’re working toward. We may need to innovate on how we test students, because current methods may not be sufficient or optimal if most students begin to learn with the help of AI. But allowing AI during exams isn’t the solution. Reading, memorizing, understanding, thinking, and practicing are what exercise the brain and build knowledge, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities, etc. That’s what strengthens and wires the mind to be creative, capable and adaptable. AI can support this process as a tool…a teacher, reference, or learning partner…but it shouldn’t replace the work that actually develops those skills.
