I think the inaction of good people just saying this is just a "technology thing" is preventing the development of sustainable, profitable and beneficial path for artificial intelligence. Beyond the left/right north/south narrative this is a human matter. It is traumatic in so many ways for people to work in data labeling, even in "benign data". But what about the underlying issues that lower the bar so much for their working conditions, the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela for example, that led that woman to escape to Colombia and work in whatever appeared just to make a living? What about the diabetes she is suffering from? Imperialist exploitation is a fact but it is enabled by the exploited nations as well. We allow our countries to have inefficient, corrupt and sometimes cruel governments and do not put an end to their wrongdoings. Our way is poisoned by extremists views of surrender or destroy it all. Rather than a stoic way of changing what we can. This we must change. Even if it is controversial, I support the use of copyrighted material to build AI systems. It is necessary. AI is the new public domain.The question is not about using it or not, but about compensation. Why not creating a mark of honor for books that say "This was used for training AI", as a quality label that increases the value of the particular book/painting. This increase in value is just an effective global compensation on its own that does not increase the costs of training AI models. Regarding the use of natural resources for AI data centers, well, we need to invest in using ocean water for that purpose instead of river water. I ask the help of engineers and scientists reading my comment to reply about this particular issue because I need to get better informed on this topic in particular. We see a great mass of water that could not possibly be consumed by humans ever and we are just not using it. Scientists, engineers, networking experts, we need you. Read again. We Need You. Activists will not end these problems and will do as much harm as the ones causing it making them look like heroes. We need to naturally tend toward the solution of the problem, but not expect the ones causing it to solve it on their own. Above all pray, pray to God, pray to Jesus. Make the world the best place.
