I appreciate how deeply thoughtful you were around your points about where we want to spend time. Why would someone want a layer between them and the people they care about? Clearly a poor use of tech and an intrusion on the valuable parts of our lives. I disagree that notion of seeking efficiency in our time is fundamentally bad. There are many things I don't want to or can't do that spending my time on are terrible. If I can use AI to create something non-infringing art in a complimentary area of art to what I create then my choices are either use the cheap AI or possibly use nothing because learning a second craft to high degree of skill is simply not possible for many. What if an author can't afford to create a painting that would make a create combined work and they can do so without violating copyright or even emulating a person at all? Someday AI art will be original and good, there is nothing magical about people, there is nothing stopping a computer process from doing what a mind is doing besides the skill of software developers? What happens to artists that day, the day computers produce truly orginal and thoughtful art? You won't stop saying AI shouldn't copy people and you already say people shouldn't trace because they aren't appreciating the art. I don't think copying is the core problem, I think capitalism is the core problem and we need something other than copyright. Clearly empowering musicians to have written words, and painters to have software, and authors to have music are all good things and we can all create more art in more ways than yesteryear and that would be a good and desirable thing. But we don't want the wealthy to profit from the work of the poor, and copyright is a poor tool for achieving that and copyright is clearly inadequate. On a purely practical note: if you think suing is effective, then sue! Lawyers will take cases that are likely to win even if you can't pay be because often the big company pays or no one pays, don't accept loss early on your own make someone else force you to lose, even the threat of power is a power and if hundreds are suing it will be more impactful. Generative AI is advancing very fast, be ready to poison with the next tool next month, because these things are already accounting for this.
