Yes autonomous driving is hard, and just like airline travel, the risks will never be zero even if the technology is perfect. I agree that mass adoption of car autonomy would be safer, because even with the current level of development, autonomy is immune to the human failings of inattention and aggression which are on plentiful display every day on the roads.
