Self driving cars might perform well within a town or city. There they're safer than American drivers, which is a pretty low bar.
The real problems come when you want to go places that aren't marked on the car's map. Either there must be ways to direct the car where to drive (what path to follow) or go manual driving.
Then we also have the problem already seen coming from the "assistance" provided by modern cars: People get less skilled at driving when they (can) rely on the car to always provide help.
