The societal fear and anxiety surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) are strikingly similar to the reception given to many other disruptive technologies throughout history. Here are some examples.
The Luddites in the early 19th Century. Textile workers in England protested the introduction of mechanized looms and knitting frames, fearing these machines would destroy the livelihoods of skilled artisans. They famously smashed machinery to resist the change.
The Printing Press in the 15th Century. Scribes and religious authorities worried that the mass production of books would make monks "lazy" and corrupt the sacred knowledge previously reserved for diligent hand-copying.
The Automobile in the early 20th Century. People feared the "horseless carriage" would bankrupt carriage makers, stable owners, and countless businesses tied to the horse economy.
Like Bernie (the modern day Eugene Debs) there's nothing new about this fear mongering rhetoric 🥱
