I'm also going to get a lot of flack for this since this space is mainly anti-AI, but hear me out. I think this video withholds a lot of information and misrepresents art in AI. Art in AI? Wtf is this guy saying. Let's clarify some terms. I'm going to define someone who uses strokes of some drawing medium an illustrator. I'm also going to define the exploration of an actional domain to be art. An artist is someone who is doing art. An artist does art, and that art is an illustration, so therefore they are an illustrator. Not all artists are illustrators. This is an important distinction because art has many forms; figure dancing, singing, architecture, calligraphy. Even things you wouldn't consider art is art; a restaurant server, a custodian, a construction worker, someone eating food. Any and all actions are art (is the intangible mind art?). With these definitions, creations from AI are definitely not the art of an illustrator, but the art of a prompt engineer, the art of a model engineer, the art of pipelines; the exploration of tools to iterate upon an image. But at the end of the day, AI is art that results in something represented in an image. What I don't like about this video and how it demonstrates AI it is a very shallow exploration of AI. If we were to make an example in illustration, you wanted to draw a human being? Draw a stick figure and call it a day. Do no more work, explore the piece no further, deny progression in drawing capabilities. This is how I see this video representing AI. AI art does not stop just at pressing "generate," it progresses beyond that. Of course, there are people who will stop there, but there are also many people who draw stick figures and call it a day. I think we are bikeshedding here. We are using language that overlaps illustrators and AI art, and since we intuitively know they aren't the same, we reject it. Obviously the stroke of the hand is not the same as pressing a button. Instead of arguing about definitions, we should be discussing about ethics.
