I'm not an artist, but I am a writer, and I'm very painstaking about what I write. There are projects that have taken me months, even years to finish - not great in terms of productivity (and the main reason why I'm not published yet), but it does mean that I can be proud of everything I finish - by that point, it is literally the best I can make it.
The thought that someone could just type a few prompts into a program and get a counterfeit of my work - of anyone's work - is appalling. All that work, all those creative decisions, word choices, character changes, all the million-and-one things that go into creating even a short piece of fiction - all clumsily copied in a shoddy, slipshod fashion in a few minutes by a dumb, soulless machine. And if that happens to me often enough, people will start to think the machine's writing is mine, that its mistakes, its unoriginality, its repetitions and shoddy choices, all are mine - and how can I prove them wrong, when whatever I write to show them otherwise will just be poorly copied again?
That, to me, is truly evil. That is reducing all human potential down to factory settings, a mold and a stamp and a robot arm. That would truly be a 'not with a bang, but a whimper' end to humanity - that we killed our creativity as a species, and therefore our future, out of pure laziness.
