I honestly have no idea how all this is going to pan out. I'm a senior engineer and started coding in the early 80s, and have worked mostly on desktop apps and in the games industry. I highly doubt AI will pose much of a threat to lower level stuff in the near-mid future, but who knows? Progress can be both great and totally shit, depending on how you look at it.
