I'm a freelance illustrator, my role is exactly that of the AI: I interpret a prompt and translate someone's idea into an illustration. My clients are mostly (literary) authors themselves, the briefs they give me can be extremely vague (even as far as saying I need an illustration, period) or extremely detailed (down to how the buttons on a character's shirt look like), and just as varied is the feedback they provide and the creative control they want to exert over the final outcome, some of their ideas are mundane and unoriginal and some others are fantastic and integral to the success of the illustration; I've had my fair share of "clients from hell" who had unrealistic expectations, wanted infinite revisions, some even went as far as pointing out individual brush strokes they didn't like, yet I've never met a single client who would even dream of claiming authorship of the work I've done for them, even when I was starting out and the pay was miserable there was at least the shared understanding that I was the author and if they wanted to use my work I would have to transfer the rights to them. Even in the world of work for hire contracts with clients who demand you to give them full ownership in perpetuity all across the universe, most clients still acknowledge you as the author, entitled to (eventually) use the work in your own portfolio and even sell limited numbers of prints.
