I don’t hear people asking this question- let’s say it’s true that AI will displace millions of jobs. It’s always assumed and taken for granted that this was causal, that it’s the introduction of AI that caused this. Why is nobody asking if it’s more of a correlation, a coincidence with others things going on in the economy. For instance, if companies are desperate and let’s be honest about that, there is a desperation to replace employees (I don’t necessarily believe that but just for the sake of argument). What if actually what is going on is that the economy is crashing (it certainly feels like it) and the desperation comes from the idea that maybe, just maybe, AI is a life preserver. In other words, with AI you get 20% unemployment (conservatively), but without it unemployment would be twice or three times as much.
