I grew up playing flight sims. So when they say "Autopilot" I do NOT think of a magic button that you press and the plane/car flies/drives itself. Because that's not what autopilots do. They are far more rudimentary than that. They provide "modes" which take parameters. Horizontal (heading/track/route), Vertical altitude (and speed in more advanced APs). If you tell the autopilot to climb to 50,000ft at 3,000fpm and you are in a C172, it will attempt it, stall and if the AP doesn't automatically disconnect, most likely spin into the deck. Even airline autopilots are just a computer running a sequence of these horizontal and vertical plans. The closest thing to what an auto-drive car does, for a plane, would be auto TCAS evasion, which is very, very new and I'm not even sure the latest production birds have that. (TCAS is traffic safety system where planes communicate electronically when they get close). Normally all this gives is a visual and audio warning and suggested action. So I would LIKE to have the same in the car. I already have cruise control. Lane hold would be nice. Distance to car in front hold would be nice. Anti-side swipe response and emergency braking in low speed resisdential areas). Just NOT a full "Magic Button", that is just stupid to believe it will work today, or for quite a while. However, we run into the next problem which the airline industry ran into. Idle pilots/drivers lose concentration. So in the case of airliners, they make the pilots run a paper (or iPad) copy of the navigation, fuel, communication plans, double checking the actual against planned. Paperwork. Just to keep them awake and aware. I personally find when I end up driving behind a slow car, my attention starts to drift. Driving that slowly allows me too much time to think about other things and it's distracting. I fear those people driving that slow, have just got slower over time because they have slowed all of their reactions and skills down BY driving so slow.
