The "now" in the headline is clickbait. He cofounded OpenAI originally as a non-profit because the no1 concern at the start was about how capitalism could create the worst kind of powerful AI. They gave in and became for-profit to get investment but with a lot of strings attached in the hope of preventing disaster.
