I'm not sure if we will be able to make them smarter, but we will for sure make them more intrusive and less predictable.
At some point, someone will place an AI in charge of the management of a business, and if the AI runs locally, it might start manipulate things in order to make sure that it will not be shut down. The more direct way would be by doing its job so well that it becomes essential. But it might do it through dishonest was, it might "forget" to deliver messages that would lead to it being shut down, maybe it would start securing funds to keep electricity, internet access and maintenance running even when against the interest of the company.
A machine doesn't have to be smarter than the average fraudster to be dangerous.
