Fully self driving cars make sense, just not any of the ways we've tried to do it. Fully self driving cars make sense if they're the only cars on the road, and no pedestrians are on those roads, and they all know where the others are, and they have access to a beacon network to know where they are in physical space with a higher degree of accuracy than any single GPS result. This is how they appear in sci-fi. Trying to cheat our way into it with sonar and cameras was always stupid, but also if they get away with it and to the extent they get away with it they make a crapton of money in a country designed to be reliant on cars as primary transportation.
