Selling fan art, illegal. Period. If you sell it and get away with it, it’s because they haven’t seen you yet. A few companies allow this, like Hoyoverse (they make Genshin Impact) allows fan art and merch up to a certain amount of units. But I don’t know of any others that allow this. You can make shirts with words from movies and games, as it’s hard to copyright phrases (Like Captain America ‘I can do this all day’, but you can’t put his shield or face on a shirt. Now, folk do it anyway and think it’s fine..no. Disney/Marvel/Nintendo will snatch your cash with the quickness. I run a store where I sell 3rd party licensed items, but make my own Art and shirts for some items. I consult with my lawyer very very regularly about what I can and can’t do. That is best, so you don’t get sued out if the blue or have funds frozen. I do use AI for reference, but I am a 3D artist so if I have to do 2d I need references. But I never try to pass the AI off as mine. I redraw in my own style, adjust to be what I want, etc. I’m still learning to draw so AI has been so helpful when I need a reference. I hate that folk can’t just draw it. Yes it’s slow..you’ll get faster. When I started 3D art, it was sooooo slow. Now I can whip out things in minutes to hours as opposed to days and weeks when I started. So satisfying to do it yourself.
