So let me address the human equation that will be missing. Sure the trucking industry will have less drivers falling asleep at the wheel but that problem has already been addressed by newer standards for long haul trucking. But here is where I believe the problems will occur. No AI driverless truck can FEEL the road, FEEL the engine running or anticipate mechanical failures with any degree of accuracy. Without extremely advanced tire sensing, knock sensing and harmonics/acoustics based hardware there will be nothing between the Semi and the public preventing a collision. And even with such sophistication there is no way to compare the senses of a human to that of an artificial driver.
If the Truck is driven remotely the interaction between remote driver and vehicle would be lost. Run the truck autonomously and you only have GPS and remote viewing capability without a failsafe. IF the truck breaks down will it pull to the side of the road safely? If the Truck is being stalked by a road rage driver will it be able to stop in time to avoid collision? How easy is it to HiJack a driverless truck or it's cargo? What happens with the truck if it goes near the border where Illegal Aliens cross? What guarantee do we have that one of these illegals won't simply hop on the roof of the trailer and hitch a ride? How will these trucks refuel without the human element?
The problems and possible failures far outweigh any future benefit. The problem of rural driving has already been presented in this video. But what about blind spots? How many children and family pets will have to die when these vehicles take to the rural areas?
Now lets address windshear. On many roads and suspended Highways in New Mexico as well as other places across the country heavy winds have been known to upend trailers and Semi rigs. What guarantee do we have that a driverless truck won't become a troublesome road block due to a delay in dispatch to have it towed away? Then there is the clearance issue especially with Highways which cross through major cities and local townships. Railroad crossings can also be a hazard due to Train-rail height and dips in front of the crossing. Autonomous Diesel Rigs have no conscience, no fear and absolutely 0 humanity. They won't care if they cost lives. I predict major lawsuits in the near future as the autonomous Trucking industry self destructs and loses support from the Fed. I would even be willing to bet that there is already a lawyer on board to prepare for the (Acceptable Losses) to human life and cargo that is sure to occur.
Now lets address this (Lack of Drivers) issue. Guys, that's a no-brainer. My son just finished his Truck Driving course a few months ago at the top of his class. He was given a few weeks to rest before being called to work. During that time he had to find work locally. The city hired him to be a flag man on a road crew. His starting salary there was so far in excess of his potential earnings as a Truck Driver that he decided not to use his CDL for Trucking. By the end of next year his hourly pay will be around $30 an hour and he only works 4 days a week. He gets every known holiday off with pay. When he asked his Truck Driving school (Who is also his employer) about pay he discovered that they couldn't even match his starting pay as a flag man at $25 an hour while driving 6 days a week. So now he has a CDL he can't use. A school debt to pay off and a new job that can quite easily repay that huge debt over time. I would say he dodged a bullet.
I guess the upside to that however is that he will be using his CDL to drive trucks for the state at an even higher pay per assignment. So it isn't a total loss. So my second prediction is this. At some point WHEN not IF these self driving trucks begin to cause problems trained Truck drivers will be at a premium and will likely be in the drivers seat pay-wise as Big Business begins switching gears. So I'm just gonna sit here and wait to see the headlines. There are sure to be some.
