I don't think AI art is theft or illegal or immoral, and I've been very supportive of AI artists, even though I have no intention of using the technology myself (drawing is so much more fun than screaming at your computer to please just make a normal-looking hand for once!), but I realize now that I've been missing the forest for the trees. Considering the current situation where Trillion-dollar corporations are attempting to squeeze everyday artists like myself out of the market, now is not the time to bicker over whether AI art is art; or whether it is good or useful or moral. Now is the time to stand with artists in the fight against these soulless corporations who are actively trying to make them disappear. Whether you support it, as I still do, or hate it, we all should say no to AI art, at least for now. Advocating for the right to op-in or -out and pressuring sites like ArtStation and DeviantArt to remove AI art are good places to start. I also think our best strategy in the copyright battle is to focus on the affect AI art has on the market. The way AI drastically increases the competition in the market is a strong argument against fair use. I hope artists find and rally around more and better strategies. We need to do whatever we can to at least buy us some time to implement protections and regulations that keep our livelihoods safe.
