I hate AI art, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you. I think that the term "art" doesn't really have a clear meaning, as every person is bound to have different opinions on such a subjective topic, and as a result nearly any creation can be considered art to someone. And, since I don't believe that any one person's opinions on a subjective matter matter any more or less than another one person's opinions on that same subjective matter, whether or not AI art is "art" depends on who you're talking to. For example, that banana taped to a wall is art to some people, but not art to others. Hell, there are people I've met who don't think that digital music creation (like stuff made on garageband) is REAL music. These debates over whether or not something is "truly" something as subjective as "art" are futile and only serve to normalize gatekeeping. That being said, AI visual artists definitely do not have the same skillset as any other visual artists. Obviously, they write more than they draw. That is undeniably a skill, but it's not a visual art skill. Plus, it relies on the AI correctly processing what you're trying to make it create, which somewhat diminishes the credibility of it being "like a paintbrush." I don't remember my #2 pencil in middle school telling me that David Bowie only had one eye. So, in conclusion, the word "art" doesn't really have an objective meaning, AI art is different from other forms of art but not necessarily "not an artform," and pencil's don't have attitudes. That being said, AI Art is bad for a variety of other reasons. It often non-consensually uses the work of artists as part of it's training data, Open AI forces workers in low-wage countries to sift through disgusting material to remove it from ChatGPT and DALL-E's training data, and AI in general is being shoved down our collective throats like a third slice of apple pie at your grandparent's house. Like, spotify released an "AI DJ" that makes a custom radio station just for you. Spotify already has that. To steal a joke from Adam Conover, what's next, an AI volume knob? So in conclusion-er conclusion, AI art is bad but not for this reason.
